Split-leaf Philodendron, Monstera deliciosa

Kaumana Cave, Hilo
The split-leaf philodendron, also known as the monstera vine, is a native of Central America and has been introduced to Hawaii. Its flowers, seen here, produce an odor of rotting flesh and can also generate substantial metabolic heat. These are used to lure various scavenging beetles into the flower in order to serve as pollinators.
